One of the true pleasures of vacationing is settling down with a good book on the beach, or relaxing with some reading after a long day of hiking, surfing, or other activities. This is as true in Playa Flamingo as it is everywhere else - and fortunately, our country has a rich if young literary tradition that will allow you to have an even deeper appreciation of Costa Rica while you're visiting here.
The following are a small collection of highly-rated books that you can bring with you on vacation here in Playa Flamingo - or that you can read in-between visits to remind you of the things you love about staying here.1. Costa Rica - A Traveler's Literary Companion, edited by Barbara Ras and Katherine Silver
The twenty-six remarkable stories in this collection have been selected to reflect the geographical area in which each of them is set. This review by Goodreads member Courtney really sums up this book:
"I love the concept of this collection - to guide a reader through Costa Rica through literary works by its people. The stories reveal guidebook-type information about the sites and ways of life, but together they do so much more - they paint a portrait of an aesthetic sensibility tied to landscape, economics, and culture. ..."2. Monkeys Are Made of Chocolate: Exotic and Unseen Costa Rica, by Jack Ewing and Daniel Quinn
Monkeys is a collection of essays about Costa Rica's ecology, written by an American ex-pat who moved to Costa Rica in 1972. Starting as a cattle rancher and rice farmer, according to member Annette, "gradually metamorphosed into an the owner of a private national wildlife refuge that has a fabulously successful eco-tourist business." Another reader, Jason Golomb, wrote in that, "I consider this book a must-have for advance research, planning and understanding of the natural-side of this extremely eco-friendly and eco-aware country."3. Assault on Paradise, by Tatiana Lobo
This vividly imagined historical novel follows the misadventures of Pedro Albaran. Having fled the Spanish Inquisition he arrives in the Costa Rican city of Cartago, and quickly becomes embroiled with the colonial army, the Church, and the Mayan natives, as he dallies with the fairer sex and witnesses the Mayan struggle against their colonial oppressors. This swashbuckling novel deservedly won the Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz Prize in 1995.4. The Honey Trap, by Clive Egleton
This book is a thriller set in Costa Rica. British Spy Peter Ashton travels to Costa Rica to find a killer; does he find a traitor, too? Packed full of spies, terrorists and intrigue, he uncovers a baffling chain of intimidation and bribery with a most unusual set of characters. Author Clive Egelton has extensive personal experience in the intelligence and counterespionage fields, and is on top form in this fast-moving, complex, and deeply suspenseful novel.5. The Space Merchants, by Frederik Pohl and Cyril M. Kornbluth
This Amazon review sums it up nicely:
"It is the 20th Century, an advertisement-drenched world in which the big ad agencies dominate governments and everything else. Now Schoken Associates, one of the big players, has a new challenge for star copywriter Mitch Courtenay. Volunteers are needed to colonize Venus. It's a hellhole, and nobody who knew anything about it would dream of signing up. But by the time Mitch has finished, they will be queuing to get on board the spaceships."
In other words, it's classic science fiction with the books main character spending a lot of time in Costa Rica. Even though its sci-fi, it fits the mold of "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley or 1984 by George Orwell, and is as pertinent today as when it was written in the 1950's.
This list has a wide selection of genres, each of which will give you a different perspective on this immensely diverse country. Are there any other favorite books that you love about Costa Rica - do let us know.
